Here's some little known trivial stuff...The letter designation VLX stands for V-Twin, Lowered, eXtended rake. And here you thought they simply ran out of cool names.

1989-90 XL600V Trans-Alp ('90 model pictured)
583cc V2 w/3 valves per cylinder, SOHC, 5 speed tranny, 403lbs dry weight, 34" seat height
  "Did you know..."
...that Honda made a dual sport bike using the VLX motor? The XL600V "Trans-Alp" sported a 583cc V-Twin powerplant in this dual purpose bike. The bike was short lived, from 1989 to 1990. It proved too cumbersome for off-road use. The motor was the same mill in service for the VLX, so being in production in 1990 (when Honda made no VLXes) this makes it Honda's longest continuous production V2 mill.

Another "blood brother" was the 650 Hawk sport bike. Honda made these beauties from 1988-91 and essentially based the motor from the VLX motor, except it featured alonger stroke, dual pin crank, hotter cams, and higher compression. But the motor itself is still essentially a knock off of the VLX motor. The Hawk is still a popular choice by the road racers today (see message #979.1 for more info).

a VLX-mas carol

'Twas the night before vlx-mas and all down the road,

not a motor was rev-ing, because of the snow.

The chrome was all polished with great loving care,

in hopes that the springtime soon would be there.

Our hondas were nestled all snug in there bed.

while visons of sadlebags danced in my head.

Ma-ma in new leather and I in new chaps,

had just got on-line for a vlx chat.

Then in the garage there rose such a clatter,

I ran to the door to see what was the matter.

When what to my wandering eyes should appear?

but a red vlx, and a guy full of cheer.

With forks all extened and and no shock in the back,

I knew in an instant it must be "St. Shack."

He was dressed all in leather, from his head to his foot,

and his chrome was all tarnished with hot desert soot.

A bundle of chrome he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And left me chrome goodies; then turned with a jerk,

he sprang to his ride and turned on the gas,

saying "places to go and Harleys to pass"

A wink of his eye and a twist of his hand,

his hardtail did roar, oh how jealous I am.

More rapid than eagles he soared down the lane,

to all VLX-ers and he lists them by name.

"There's, T-Bird!,DaBratt! and, Octane and Vixen!

then Eyeteeth! and Hardley! and Doog ,(not to mention!)"

And too he proclaimed as he rode out of site,

"VLX-mas does rule! and to all a safe ride!"
